Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni revealed that death-overs specialist Dwayne Bravo was not fit to bowl the 20th over in the team’s defeat to Delhi Capitals. Bravo had one over up his sleeve, his previous three having gone for 23 and earning CSK the wicket of Shreyas Iyer.

“Bravo was not fit. He went out and we were not sure if he would be able to come back. The options we had were Karn [Sharma] and Jaddu [Ravindra Jadeja], so we went with Jaddu,” Dhoni told the broadcasters in his post-match interview.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming gave further details in the post-match press conference, putting in doubt his availability for CSK’s next few games: “He seems to have a right groin injury, I think. It was obviously serious enough to keep him from coming back on the field. He’s disappointed that he wasn’t able to bowl that over. That’s what he’s pretty much in the team for. He’ll have to be reassessed going forward, but at this stage you’d imagine it [recovery] is going to take a few days, or maybe a couple of weeks but we’ll assess that tomorrow,” Fleming said.

The decision to bowl Jadeja in the last over against two left-handers – Shikhar Dhawan and Axar Patel – didn’t work as Delhi Capitals picked up the 17 runs needed to secure their seventh win in IPL 2020.

Axar smashed the left-arm spinner for three sixes to help the Capitals over the line in the 180-run chase with a ball to spare.

CSK, who had clawed their way back in the contest, having conceded only 13 runs in the 18th and 19th over combined, lost the momentum as Jadeja became predictable, having to dart his deliveries wide outside the off stump. As a result, CSK suffered their sixth defeat in nine matches, keeping them on thesixth spot on the points table.
